About the data

The chart measures properties: a single apartment complex can contain many rental units. It does not measure the share of individual homes in single-unit properties.

At the survey’s 90% confidence level, published margins of error are ±1.7 percentage points for the single-unit property share, ±$46,000 for mean outstanding debt, and ±492,000 for the 49,722,000 rental-unit estimate (displayed as 49.7 million).
